Makueni: The national government has announced a substantial investment of Sh3 billion to purchase advanced medical equipment aimed at enhancing healthcare services in Makueni County, as confirmed by President William Ruto.

According to Kenya News Agency, President Ruto stated that the funds will be utilized to acquire essential medical equipment, including digital X-rays, ultrasound machines, MRI machines, and laboratory facilities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the health system in the county and improve access to healthcare services for its residents. The equipment will be distributed across all health facilities, including dispensaries and health centers, with the goal of bringing healthcare services closer to the community.

President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to providing high-quality treatment at the community level. He also revealed that the payment for this equipment will be handled by SHA, ensuring that the county government does not bear any additional financial burden.

During his visit to Makueni County, President Ruto also announced a change in the distribution of medicine from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA). Medicines will now be delivered directly to health facilities across the country, bypassing county health facilities, to ensure timely access to medications for residents.

Furthermore, President Ruto encouraged local residents to register with SHA to access health services without incurring direct costs. He highlighted the government’s target to increase the number of registered Kenyans on SHA from 27 million to 30 million within the next three to four months. The president underscored the constitutional right to health as stipulated in Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya, reiterating the government’s duty to uphold this right.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., speaking at the same event, called on the national government to assist in constructing a national trauma center at Makindu Subcounty Hospital. This facility would focus on addressing the increasing number of road accidents, particularly those involving boda boda riders, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

President Ruto was accompanied by key government officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua, and other prominent leaders.
