Kakamega: The construction of Shibinga Market has reached 85 per cent completion, with Governor Fernandes Barasa saying the facility will play a critical role in transforming trade and livelihoods in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Barasa emphasized that the modern market is a significant part of the County Government of Kakamega’s broader economic transformation agenda. This initiative aims to empower small-scale traders, farmers, and entrepreneurs by providing improved infrastructure.
Barasa highlighted the importance of constructing modern markets in creating an enabling environment for businesses to prosper. He noted that Shibinga Market would offer dignified trading spaces, stimulate economic activities, and create employment opportunities for the local population.
Reflecting his administration’s focus on grassroots economic empowerment, the project invests in modern and inclusive public infrastructure. The facility is designed with modern trading stalls, office spaces, a hotel section, and improved sanitation amenities to enhance hygiene, efficiency, and convenience for traders and customers.
The Governor also pointed out that the market is set to become a key commercial hub in Mumias East Sub-County. It will facilitate better market access for farmers and reduce post-harvest losses through better storage and trading facilities.
Barasa reiterated the county government’s commitment to implementing development projects that directly impact residents. These projects aim to strengthen local economies and support sustainable wealth creation.
Residents and traders in the area have shown support for the project, expressing optimism that the modern facility will attract more business opportunities and enhance the overall trading environment once it is completed. The county government has increased its investment in market infrastructure across Kakamega to modernise trade centres and promote economic growth at the grassroots level.
