It’s a sigh of relief for Likii residents after the launch of a Sh15 million bridge that will enable them to connect Nanyuki and Nturukuma locations at ease.
The bridge that is commonly known as Mountex Bridge was commissioned over the weekend in Likii sub location, Nturukuma.
It was constructed by the government through National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).
For years, residents coming from both sides had lamented inaccessibility of the bridge that earlier saw residents use a piece of wood that was laid down to connect the two ridges, posing a danger to school going children especially on rainy seasons.
Speaking during the launch, Laikipia East Member of Parliament, Mohammed Deddy, said the bridge would benefit residents in the long run.
“This is a legacy project; that will be used by many generations to come. The government believes in serving the people,” said Deddy.
Ms Jenifer Nyambura, the contractor, said collaborating with the residents enabled the implementation of the project within a span of four months.
Kairu Ndiritu, a resident, said they had suffered for a long time but with the construction of Mountex Bridge, they were glad their need had been fulfilled.
“Women and students had suffered before the construction of the bridge. Residents used all means including swimming to the next side of the river. It was a disaster during the rainy season,” revealed Ndiritu.
He further said, it was a dream come true since they had formed a WhatsApp group to raise funds for the construction, before the legislator came in to their aid.
The bushy road connecting both areas was also opened and surfaced with murram.
