Kericho: The government has allocated Sh1.8 billion in the 2026/27 Financial Year to expand electricity connectivity in Kericho County. At least 17,500 households are expected to benefit from enhanced access to reliable electricity under the rural electrification programme.
According to Kenya News Agency, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi made the announcement during the commissioning and launch of Kenya Power Last Mile Connectivity Programme (LMCP) projects in Soin/Sigowet Constituency. The government has earmarked Sh270 million to connect 2,500 households to electricity in the constituency. The tour included visits to Barageiwet Village in Soliat Ward, Kesainet Village in Kaplelartet Ward, and Chebobta Village in Sigowet Ward, where Wandayi commissioned completed projects and flagged off new electricity connectivity works.
Wandayi emphasized the government’s commitment to providing affordable and reliable electricity access to accelerate economic growth and improve livelihoods. He assured that those who have not yet benefited from the electricity programme would eventually be connected, underscoring electricity as a right for all Kenyans.
Soin/Sigowet Member of Parliament Justice Kemei expressed support for the government’s rural electrification initiatives, highlighting the implementation of 30 electricity projects across the constituency aimed at increasing electricity access and promoting socio-economic development.
Kericho County Commissioner Omari Ali noted that the electrification programme would enhance educational opportunities by allowing children to study at night and improve academic performance. He added that access to electricity would enable residents to utilize electrical appliances and equipment, boosting productivity and quality of life.
