The National Steering Committee on Drought Response, distributed relief food to hunger stricken households in Lodokejek Village in Samburu Central Sub-County in an ongoing intervention, to ensure no Kenyan dies of hunger.
The intervention which was launched last week by ASAL Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, aims at reaching residents in counties worst hit by drought, as a result of six consecutive failed rain seasons.
The National Drought Response Committee in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross and the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), distributed 1,275 food hampers that will cushion residents from the biting drought.
Speaking at Lodokejek Primary School during the launch of the food distribution exercise, Pankaj Meghji, a member of the National Committee said that this is the First Phase and more food hampers will be distributed in Samburu North and Samburu East.
“Each hamper contains 3kgs of uji flour, 6kg maize meal, 3kg beans, 8kg rice, 1kg cooking fat and 1kg salt,” he said.
Pankaj added that other National Government interventions will include sinking more boreholes, water trucking, provision of water tanks, rehabilitation and repair of boreholes as well as fuel subsidies for strategic watering points.
Samburu Central Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Tutus Omanyi, said that the most vulnerable members in the society will be given first priority, especially families that have been displaced from their homes due to insecurity along the Samburu-Baringo border.
