Rotary Club’s Polio Awareness Campaign and Blood Donation Drive in Migori

Nairobi: The Suna Migori Rotary Club has held a procession in Migori Town to champion the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign, an annual event organised by the Rotary International Club.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Regional Coordinator, Rotary Club-Western Region Official Rose Waringa, stated that the aim of this annual event, conducted on a rotational basis, is to ensure Migori County remains a polio-free zone. With reported cases of polio in neighboring Tanzania, which borders Migori County, the campaign seeks to raise awareness and sensitize the community on the importance of immunization.

Rotarian Waringa highlighted that the club provides opportunities and support for immunization to ensure every child is vaccinated against polio, securing a healthy future generation. She emphasized that Rotary International operates as a nonprofit organization where individuals volunteer their time, skills, and resources to give back to the community. Waringa encouraged those with a passion for helping the less privilege
d in society to join the Rotary family.

The event was marked by participation from Rotary Club officials from Western Region, including Bugoma, Siaya, and Kisumu, contributing to zero polio cases in at least five counties in the region. Additionally, the procession included a blood donation drive to support the Migori County Referral Hospital’s blood bank.

Migori County Blood Transfusion Coordinator, Catherine Adera, acknowledged that the Suna Migori Rotary Club’s blood donation initiative would significantly aid in saving the lives of Migori residents. The initiative is particularly crucial for cases of postpartum hemorrhage among mothers, blood disorders like sickle cell, dialysis procedures, surgical operations, and severe anemia in children. Adera noted the hospital’s need for 1200 units of blood per month and expressed gratitude toward the Rotary Club for their efforts in maintaining a sufficient blood bank.
