Busia: The Rotary Club of Busia, in collaboration with Oxford University Press East Africa Ltd, has generously donated over 14,000 textbooks to 16 primary and secondary schools throughout Busia County. Among the beneficiaries were Siwongo Primary School with 1,000 books, Esirisia Secondary School with 1,500 books, Budokomi Secondary School with 1,500 books, St Paul’s Amukura High School with 1,000 books, and St Jacobs Kaliwa Secondary School with 1,500 books.
According to Kenya News Agency, the outgoing President of the Rotary Club of Busia, Ms. Shilla Bochaberi, explained that the selection of schools was based on the need for library resources. The distribution focused on schools without libraries or those with poorly equipped ones, as well as those with title deeds, to ensure the most deserving institutions received these vital learning tools.
Ms. Bochaberi highlighted the importance of supporting education in the county, noting the challenges faced by the education system. She emphasized that the initiative aims to provide students with access to necessary learning materials, thus shaping a bright future for them. The club’s President Nominee, Sarah Martha, echoed these sentiments, stressing the club’s commitment to enhancing education and transforming communities.
Teachers, including Judith Shile from Esirisia Secondary School, acknowledged the positive impact of the donation. She noted that the textbooks would aid both teachers and students in their academic pursuits, addressing previous challenges in delivering adequate educational resources. Her colleague, Abraham Wabwoba, encouraged other benefactors to support schools in acquiring essential materials, highlighting the role of life skill books in character development.
Students, led by Joyce Egesa from Esirisia Secondary School, expressed their gratitude for the initiative, recognizing its potential to improve their academic performance. With the availability of revision materials, students are optimistic about achieving better results.
