Sabatia: Defilement cases have become a significant issue in Sabatia Sub County of Vihiga County, as confirmed by the area Children’s Officer, Emily Mageto. She highlighted an increase in these cases, based on data from hospitals, police stations, and Children offices.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mageto pointed out that fear of reporting incidents and resolving them within families through informal means, often involving family members as perpetrators, are contributing factors to the rise. In an interview, she emphasized her role in promoting and safeguarding children’s welfare in the Sub County by implementing the Children Act of 2022 and other legal instruments.
Mageto outlined the core responsibilities of her office, including family mediation and legal intervention. She explained that family mediation helps integrate and unify families, addressing issues such as custody, neglect, abuse, and defilement that affect children. In cases of conflict, her office assesses and investigates to resolve issues, enabling parents to co-parent effectively.
Through legal intervention, Mageto’s office supports children in conflict with the law, ensuring they are represented in court, especially those lacking guardians. They monitor children in juvenile systems, rehabilitation centers, and remand homes, providing safety for those in danger.
Mageto confirmed efforts to raise awareness through public sensitizations, educating communities about children’s rights, roles, and protection. Her office also ensures data entry for reports at county and national levels to reflect the state of children in Kenya.
In defilement cases, Mageto assured that her office conducts investigations, offers psychosocial support, and ensures medical treatment for affected children before reporting incidents to the police. Her office can place children in institutions like children’s homes to provide therapy and protection as cases proceed.
Challenges faced by Mageto’s office include inadequate resources, understaffing, and insufficient funding, affecting operations like rescue missions. Cultural beliefs within the Maragoli community and ignorance of children’s rights also pose challenges. Poor parenting, court delays, and community compromises further complicate efforts.
Mageto highlighted the upcoming Day of the African Child celebrations on June 16, 2026, at Sabatia Primary School, themed “Children Have Access to Safe Water and Sanitation.” She called on stakeholders and partners for support.
