Narok: The Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET), Mr. James Torome, has made a fervent appeal for the abstinence from retrogressive cultural practices that impede the education of Maasai Community’s children.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mr. Torome highlighted outdated traditions, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early marriage, and moranism, as significant barriers to the educational advancement of the Maa-speaking community’s children.

Mr. Torome expressed particular concern over the adverse effects these practices have on the girl child, noting their role in limiting opportunities and contributing to high school dropout rates. He urged the community to embrace modernity by prioritizing education for their children. Additionally, he cautioned young men against succumbing to drugs and criminal activities and instead encouraged them to explore creative ventures such as farming, livestock rearing, and small businesses.

During the funeral ceremony of Mama Peris Kasaine, Mr. Torome appealed to young men and elders to take a stand against FGM as part of efforts to eradicate the practice in the county. He emphasized the government’s stance against FGM and called on the community to ensure no young girl undergoes the harmful procedure. Mr. Torome also urged church leaders to promote unity and accountability, cautioning them against allowing political agendas to infiltrate religious platforms.

Ms. Josephine Seneiyo, a Nominated Member of the Narok County Assembly, echoed the call for peace and restraint among politicians and youth ahead of the 2027 General Election. She advocated for tolerance and the embracing of divergent views to sustain peace and democracy during election campaigns and polling.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lemiso Kimiti, MCA for Keekonyokie Ward, stressed the importance of respecting the presidency and urged aspirants for the country’s top office to refrain from insults. He highlighted the need for honest and meaningful leadership focused on uniting Kenyans and creating opportunities for all.

Mr. Robinson Torome Nalengoyo, Narok County ODM party Branch Chairman, urged the party’s leadership to accommodate divergent views and maintain order before entering coalition agreements with the United Democratic Alliance ahead of the next election.
