Residents Cautioned Against Taking Matters Into Own Hands

Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere has urged residents to work with security officers in addressing grievances instead of taking the law into their own hands.

Speaking during a public baraza at Nyacheki market in Nyamache Sub County, Kisii, Anjere condemned the gruesome incident that occurred in Sugubo village in the same sub-county on Saturday where four people were killed by an irate mob over a prolonged land tussle.

The County Commissioner said the killings were executed by persons who disregarded the law and community members ought to understand the importance of security agencies in the county.

“As the security team, we cannot accept such occurrences to continue in our society. We must be able to respect security institutions including the courts, police stations, and officers in place charged with the responsibility of addressing issues within the community,” he stated.

Anjere noted that the rule of law must be observed at all times and urged the family involved in the land battle to meet with the security team in the sub-county to find an amicable solution.

Further, the CC affirmed that they were working closely with the Police Commander and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in the county to fulfill the government’s mandate of providing security in the region and would not allow the residents to live in fear.

Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases promised that action would be taken against those who took part in the killings adding that they would get that information from the community members.

According to the area Sub County Police Commander Kipkemboi Kipkulei, angry villagers attacked and killed four workers of the late David Mogire after they protested against the burial of his brother James Omwega on his farm saying the piece of land belonged to Mogire and his family.

He said that Omwega had passed on the previous week and his family intended to bury his body in the said parcel of land belonging to his brother, a matter which was protested by the workers forcing some of the community members to kill them and burn houses within the compound.
