Residents and Ward Representatives Call for Timely Disbursement of County Funds

Murang’a: Residents of Murang’a County and their ward representatives have urged the national government, through the Ministry of Finance, to establish clear mechanisms that ensure funds are released to counties on time and in an orderly manner. They called on the National Government to strengthen oversight and accountability in the disbursement of county funds.

According to Kenya News Agency, the residents and representatives spoke during a scholarship check distribution ceremony for students from underprivileged families in Kagunduini Ward, Kandara Constituency, under the Murang’a County Inua Masomo program. The local leaders emphasized that timely funding would greatly enhance the implementation of development projects, particularly in rural areas, including schools, healthcare centers, and infrastructure projects.

Kagunduini MCA Samson Mukora urged a more coordinated approach to bursary disbursements, noting the need for transparency. He suggested that all bursary funds, whether from MPs, MCAs, governors, or women representatives, should be consolidated into one pool and sent directly to schools to reduce delays and ensure students receive support promptly.

Mukora noted that fragmented disbursements often lead to delays, affecting students who depend on financial support to continue their education. He highlighted that over 1,300 students in the ward rely on bursaries for their education and that delays deny them learning opportunities.

John Mwaura, a parent, shared concerns about numerous college and senior secondary school students currently out of school due to unpaid fees. He stated that some students are staying home simply because funds haven’t reached the schools, leaving many stranded as they await bursary disbursements.

Nominated MCA Diana Muthoni stressed that late fund release has repeatedly stalled key development initiatives. She mentioned that projects such as classroom renovations and procurement of learning materials are delayed due to late disbursement, affecting the learning environment and demoralizing both students and parents.

Murang’a County Assembly Majority Leader Kibe wa Sally noted the importance of efficient fund management for effective development planning. He stated that timely and transparent release of funds allows counties to plan and implement projects according to the priorities of the people, ensuring that students and communities benefit without unnecessary delays.

At the Kagunduini event, over 1,337 students received bursary checks under the Inua Masomo program, which provides tuition support for students from low-income families. The initiative also targets vulnerable groups, including orphans and learners living with disabilities.
