Bonchari: A section of residents in Bonchari Constituency, Kisii County, have criticized their area MP, Charles Onchoke, over alleged discrimination in the issuance of bursaries, claiming it could derail the government’s effort toward 100 percent transition to senior schools. Speaking at Suneka town in the constituency, the residents, led by Pavel Oimeke, the former area MP, highlighted concerns regarding the unfair distribution of financial support.
According to Kenya News Agency, Oimeke claimed that the legislator was only awarding bursaries to learners attending schools within the constituency, while excluding those studying in other areas. He urged the current MP to reassess his allocation strategy to ensure that all needy residents benefit.
Oimeke stressed that children attending national schools outside the county, who are future leaders, could face disruptions in their education if Onchoke continued denying them bursaries. This is particularly concerning after the government allocated Sh171 million for the area NG-CDF, with 40 percent designated for bursaries as per the revised CDF Act of 2023. He appealed to the sitting MP to allocate at least Sh8,000 per secondary school learner, Sh10,000 for college students, and Sh15,000 for university students.
Another resident, Paul Mogire, also accused the MP of discriminating in the allocation of resources for the development of local school infrastructure. However, speaking on the phone, Onchoke denied the allegations, stating that the bursaries had not yet been distributed to any beneficiaries. He clarified that the bursary distribution exercise would commence on Tuesday.
