Karachuonyo west: Education stakeholders in Karachuonyo West Sub-County have raised concerns over the rising incidents of theft involving digital learning gadgets in primary schools. Marauding burglars have been targeting these institutions, breaking into secured rooms, and stealing electronic devices essential for education.
According to Kenya News Agency, the most recent burglary incidents occurred at Oindo and Siala Primary Schools located in the Kanjira area. Kanjira location Chief, Elly Obuya, reported that the burglars successfully breached the offices of both the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher at Oindo Primary School. The thieves managed to steal 35 tablets, a microscope, three rims of photocopying papers, and a printer. The burglary was executed quietly, ensuring the school security guard remained unaware until after the thieves had fled.
Chief Obuya stated that the police have been informed and are actively investigating the incidents. He advised the school administrations to consider installing anti-burglary doors and to invest in higher quality padlocks for securing valuable equipment. He observed that the existing padlocks were inadequate for protecting such valuable assets.
Furthermore, Obuya recommended that schools employ well-trained security personnel, emphasizing the need for youthful and trained guards to protect school properties effectively. At Siala Primary School, a similar theft was reported where two laptops were stolen, though the thieves were interrupted by the security guard before they could steal a printer.
George Okoth, a local resident, urged the government to enhance security measures in schools to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of educational resources.
