The reconstruction of Liter Girls’ Secondary School, which was swept away by floods in April 2020 has kicked off at a cost of Sh100 million.
The refurbishment will include construction of a laboratory and a library, which will cost Sh23 million, 8 classrooms and putting up of water reservoirs at a cost of Sh15 million each, among others.
A Works Officer, Were Kuselo, told the County Development and Implementation Coordination Committee (CDICC), that the reconstruction work will take 32 weeks saying they were optimistic that the works will be complete by August this year.
A senior director at the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) Richard Tutah, called on the contractor to ensure that they liaise with all the government agencies as they start the works to ensure that the school is constructed as per standards.
The school was swept away leaving over 600 girls with nowhere to learn with the government transferring them to the nearby Kapkondot Secondary School.
Members of the community donated land for the construction of the school saying it could not have been reconstructed at the former location that is prone to floods.
Meanwhile, residents of Keiyo South sub county will soon travel directly to the county headquarters in Iten as the Nyaru Iten road nears completion.
The Regional Manager Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Eng. Franklin Kipyator, said the 53km road was complete with only 200 metres remaining which he said will be ready soon, adding that road markings and pitching of drainage ditches is on course.
The CDICC chaired by the Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner, Dr Ahmed Omar, cautioned residents against erecting illegal bumps on the roads saying they were a risk to motorists.
