Nairobi: The Raila Odinga International Sports Complex is nearing completion, with the national steering committee reporting that the stadium is 80 percent complete as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Designated as one of Kenya’s primary venues for AFCON 2027, the stadium is being developed under a multisectoral approach involving several key state departments.
According to Kenya News Agency, the collaborative approach ensures integration of construction works, media, communications, and security infrastructure to facilitate smooth operations during the tournament. During an inspection tour, PS Sports Elijah Mwangi confirmed that Kenya is well prepared to host the tournament. Mwangi also highlighted that the Raila Odinga International Sports Complex is a flagship project for Kenya’s sporting infrastructure, with progress closely reviewed to ensure it meets international standards.
PS Defence Dr. Patrick Mariru pointed out the importance of coordinated oversight, noting that the stadium is more than 80 percent complete. He explained that the main structural works are finished, key systems installed, and the remaining 20 percent involves installations, fittings, and finishing works. Dr. Mariru added that integrated development, including access roads and security infrastructure, ensures sustainability.
PS Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke emphasised the role of state-of-the-art media and communications systems. Advanced broadcast and communications systems are being integrated to support operations, media coverage, and logistics. PS Internal Security Raymond Omollo stated that the stadium’s timely progress demonstrates Kenya’s commitment to sports development.
Infrastructure Secretary Washington Okumu assured that internet connectivity and digital systems will meet international standards. The stadium is expected to play a central role in Kenya’s AFCON 2027 hosting plans, alongside other supporting infrastructure.
