Registration of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Laikipia County has kicked off in earnest targeting at least 2,000 people who will be issued with new generation cards.
National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Laikipia County disability officer Dennis Kimathi in an interview with KNA today, said the registration exercise is aimed at replacing old generation cards with new security enabled features.
“Cards with security features are hard to forge and that is why we are replacing the old generation card, she said.
“People have been taking advantage of people with disabilities by using the old generation cards, going forward, that will be impossible,” said Kimathi, urging PWDs who have never been registered to take advantage of the opportunity.
The Disability Officer called on PWDs to take advantage of the registration drive noting only those with new cards will benefit from the government.
“I call upon PWDs in Laikipia to come out in large numbers and get registered. Even those with old generation cards should come and upgrade to the new cards. Opportunities are underway for those who will have registered,” the disability officer urged.
He also pointed out that the government had devolved PWDs registration to county level noting that time taken to get medical report approval from the Ministry of Health had also been reduced to two weeks, to help in streamlining the registration process.
“It only takes a maximum of two weeks for a medical report to be approved and one to get registered. The registration process is smooth, once registered, we issue you with a waiting card which you can use to get services from the NCPWD before your new generation card is out,” revealed Kimathi.
Kimathi said, those seeking to get registered will be required to provide one passport size photo with a white background and copy of national identity for adults or birth certificate for minors under 18 years. Those to be registered need to physically appear during the exercise.
The exercise will end on December 19, 2022.
