Vihiga: Internal Security and National Administration PS Dr. Raymond Omollo has ordered the immediate release of all motorcycles impounded for petty offences, in an effort to bolster cooperation between the government and boda boda operators.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Omollo made the announcement during a stakeholders’ forum held at the Vihiga County Commissioner’s Residence. He clarified that the directive pertains solely to motorcycles detained for minor infractions, while urging operators to adhere to legal requirements in the future. “All motorcycles held at police stations on account of petty offences should be released,” he stated.
Despite the release order, Dr. Omollo emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing transport and security regulations moving forward. He urged boda boda riders to secure valid insurance coverage and register with recognized associations to foster accountability and facilitate the identification of criminal elements within the sector.
Dr. Omollo also called for enhanced collaboration between boda boda operators and security agencies to promote peace and security in the region. He highlighted the importance of maintaining good relations with security officers and other relevant authorities, citing an earlier security meeting in Emuhaya where regular informational meetings were agreed upon.
Recognizing the vital role of the boda boda industry in the nation’s transport sector and economy, Dr. Omollo urged operators to continue supporting security efforts through information sharing and community policing initiatives. His address comes in response to concerns from boda boda leaders regarding rising insecurity, including attacks and killings of riders.
The forum followed recent unrest in Luanda Sub-County, where a crackdown on motorcycles led to protests and road blockades after police targeted theft syndicates. The event was attended by Western Regional Commissioner Jeremiah Gicheru, Vihiga County Commissioner Allan Machari, Vihiga MP Ernest Ogesi, Kakamega Deputy Governor, Luanda MP Dick Maungu, and other national and county government leaders.
