Vatican City: Pope Francis, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88 following a cerebral stroke that resulted in irreversible heart failure. His passing marks the end of a 12-year papacy characterized by humility and a strong advocacy for the marginalized.

According to Kenya News Agency, Nyeri Diocese Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Pope Francis as a humble servant leader and a great shepherd to the Catholic Church. Archbishop Muheria highlighted the pope’s dedication to encouraging Christians to open their hearts and the church to the poor, emphasizing his legacy as a beloved leader who exemplified simplicity and ordinariness.

The Vatican announced the pope’s passing on Monday, noting that he was last seen during the Easter Sunday mass at St Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis is remembered for his progressive views, including his appeal for the church to welcome all people, regardless of sexual orientation. Despite his stance on inclusivity, he maintained traditional views on issues such as euthanasia, the death penalty, and abortion, likening abortion to hiring a hitman and criticizing euthanasia as part of a throwaway culture.

Pope Francis also initiated changes within the church, such as allowing divorced and remarried Catholics to receive holy communion after a vetting process by priests or bishops. This move aimed to integrate those previously considered to be living in adultery back into the church community.

Archbishop Muheria, in his video message, urged Kenyans to uphold the values Pope Francis advocated during his 2015 visit, emphasizing care for the marginalized and love for the poor. Other leaders, including Nyeri Governor Dr. Mutahi Kahiga, also paid tribute to the pope, praising his servant leadership and strong moral stance.

Governor Kahiga expressed his condolences, stating, “Rest in eternal peace Pope Francis. I join the millions of Catholics in mourning this servant of God. We recalled his servant leadership and his strong moral stand. May he rest with angels.”
