At least 60 students across Nandi County got some reprieve after Kosirai Ward Member of County Assembly Sarah Mutwol offered the Sh300, 000 she had budgeted for her homecoming party to pay their fees.
According to Mutwol, the fund was meant for her ceremony this weekend but she opted to divert the money to bursary for needy students from poor background.
Speaking after issuing out the bursary cheques to the students from various primary and secondary schools, Mutwol said each of the beneficiaries would get Sh5, 000 to enable them to continue further their education especially those from day school.
“Education is the only equalizer between the rich and the poor that’s why my focus is to invest in the sector to enable more learners get quality education,” she said
The former primary school teacher who was elected as Independent candidate during the last general election urged the beneficiaries to focus on their studies so that in future they give back to the society.
“It’s not easy to do things from your own pocket that’s why you need to work hard so that you can help others in future,” she said
The MCA noted that due to hard economic times, she saw no need to celebrate her victory yet some students will not be joining schools due to lack of schools fees.
“I have passion for education having taught for 35 years. During my teaching career I learnt so many things. Let’s help children with the little we have so that they can continue with their education,” pointed out Mutwol
Parents and students present thanked the MCA for the good gesture saying she has proven to the electorates that she values education.
Everline Chelimo, one of the parent said education is the only way we are going to change the society to be a better place
“I am calling upon all leaders to join hands in the same course so that we are able to eradicate poverty in our community,” she said
Another parent Kennedy Kosgei thanked locals for electing a leader who is not self-centered but thinks about the welfare of the whole community.
