Police in Siaya are investigating an incident, where a parliamentary candidate in Rarieda constituency drew a gun and shot in the air, scaring members of the public on voting day.
According to the Siaya County Police Commander, Michael Muchiri, the candidate, Augustine Neto Adhola discharged one bullet in the air during a confrontation that occurred at Aram trading centre.
He said that the gun has been recalled and will be taken for ballistic examination.
Muchiri said that apart from the incident, and a few others in Ugenya and Ugunja constituencies, the county reported minimal security breaches during yesterday’s voting exercise.
“Apart from a few incidents such as the early morning attack on an assistant chief in East Ugenya and another one where a mentally unstable man stabbed two people who were waiting in a queue to vote at Sigomere primary school in Ugunja constituency, the exercise was smooth,” said Muchiri.
He said that so far, no incident has been reported during the counting and tallying of votes.
The police boss called on Siaya residents to remain calm as the IEBC officials went about their duties of tallying the results.
“The security men are alert and ready to ensure that every one was secure” said Muchiri who talked to the media at the Alego / Usonga tallying centre within the Siaya Institute of Technology.
