The Kenya Karate Federation Western region is partnering with institutions of learning to open up Karate Academies to prepare students for the sport at an early age.
The Secretary General of Kenya Karate Federation Western Region Christopher Ouma says apart from Universities, the federation has set up the academies at Ekambuli High school, Sigalagala and at Musingu.
He says that they are targeting to have competitions for secondary schools and primary schools once the negotiations to open up academies in all schools become successful.
He was speaking during the Inter-University Karate and TaeKwondo Championships for Western Conference bringing together 10 Universities.
The Conference Championships for Western region were held at Masinde Muliro University which were preliminaries for the National Playoffs for indoor games that will be held at Meru University on 25th February this year.
The Chairperson of Kenya University Sports Association Western Conference Shisoka Akaka who is also the Director of sports at Masinde Muliro University said the championship is guided by the International University Sports Federation(FISU) rules as they hope to play up to the international levels.
“As a conference we are aiming at performing our best at the National Play offs at Meru University in February and after that we have the East Africa games and the Africa Inter-University games and the International Inter-University games which is a global event,” he noted.
During the championships, Rongo University clinched the first position followed by Maseno University and MMUST took the third position. They were followed by Kaimosi University in fourth position, Kibabii University, Kisii and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University.
