The Narok county security team has today joined hands with Enduata Foundation to plant about 1, 000 tree seedlings at the Narok GK prison.
Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde led the Deputy County Commissioners from the eight sub counties, County Police Commander John Kizito among other senior security officers in the county in the tree planting exercise.
He said the county has a target to plant over 270, 000 tree seedlings every month, saying this was very possible if everybody took an individual responsibility of planting trees.
“The government has instructed all of us to plant trees in our individual farms, government institutions and organizations. We are today leading by example so that we can attain our target,” he said.
He observed that climate change had hit the entire world as prolonged dry spells and floods are being experienced in different parts of the world.
“Everybody is being affected by climate change. If we will not take caution as instructed by our President, then we are the ones who will suffer. I urge everyone to take the responsibility of planting trees,” added the county commissioner.
Officer in-charge of Narok GK Prison Benson Lomeri said the prisoners will nurture the planted seedlings and continue growing more trees in the prison premises.
“Some of the tree species planted are Cyprus, blue gums and pine that do well in the area. We are training prisoners on tree planting and we expect to plant more trees this year,” he said.
Enduata Foundation chairlady Ms. Regina Egelan said they work with like-minded people to plant trees and conserve the environment.
Egelan said the group consists of ten young nurses based at the Narok County Referral Hospital, who besides treating human beings have a passion for treating the environment.
She thanked the County Commissioner for agreeing to work with them to conserve the environment saying he was a good example of leaders who have been passionate in planting trees.
“We have been donating trees to institutions and individuals who are willing to plant trees. We aim at planting more trees in church compounds, schools, hospitals and government institutions this year,” she said.
