Kisumu: Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o today launched the distribution of machines and equipment worth Sh18 million to Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in the county. The exercise targets 28 VTCs and aims to expand and enhance hands-on training for more than 6,500 learners within the county.

According to Kenya News Agency, the governor, speaking at the flagging-off ceremony at Kisumu City Hall, emphasized that the initiative is designed to equip young people with industry-related skills to boost job creation and entrepreneurship. Prof. Nyong’o stated, ‘This is more than just a handover of tools. It is a declaration of our determination to empower our youth, strengthen the technical skills sector, and steer Kisumu towards a self-reliant and prosperous future.’

The equipment is set to be distributed across all eight sub-counties and will support courses such as electrical installation, plumbing, garment making, welding, beauty therapy, and Information Communication Technology (ICT). The governor highlighted that this investment aligns with the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model, which emphasizes practical learning to ensure graduates are prepared for the job market.

Prof. Nyong’o described each piece of equipment as a potential seed that can grow into small enterprises, innovations, or skilled employment opportunities. He urged trainees to make full use of the resources, noting that the technical skills acquired at these institutions have the potential to open up opportunities both locally and internationally.

He further encouraged the youth by saying, ‘Learn with commitment, innovate without fear, and remember that the skills you gain here can transform not only your life but also your community.’ Additionally, Prof. Nyong’o pledged to expand access to vocational training to strengthen connections between graduates and job market opportunities in Kenya and abroad.

The distribution follows a recent vocational training stakeholders’ meeting at Akado VTC, where discussions on enhancing CBET and technical education in Kisumu took place.
