Nyamira: Caregivers and parents in Nyamira South Sub-County have been trained and certified on positive parenting in a bid to ensure that children grow and thrive in safe and conducive home environments. The initiative is courtesy of a partnership between the Department of Children Services and the Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS) organisation.

According to Kenya News Agency, Billy Adera Nyamira, South Sub-County Children Officer, highlighted an alarming rate of child neglect cases in Nyamira, which signals that many children are left without responsible adult supervision. These children often endure psychological turmoil and adverse living conditions. Many are left in the care of elderly and ailing grandparents as their parents leave in search of employment, sometimes returning empty-handed.

In response to the growing number of neglected children, the Department of Children Services partnered with ICS to offer an 11-module comprehensive training program on positive parenting. This initiative
aims to equip caregivers with essential parenting skills to foster happy and healthy family environments, potentially reducing child neglect in the area.

ICS County Officer Moses Gundi, overseeing the training program in Nyamira, expressed optimism about the positive reception from parents. He believes the program will significantly transform homes in Nyamira South, ensuring children receive the necessary care and love for their development. The training covers crucial topics such as family relations, child development, mental health, positive discipline, and financial management.

Last week, a graduation ceremony was held, where parents and caregivers shared valuable insights gained from the program. Many expressed a renewed perspective on managing their homes and raising families where all members contribute to decision-making processes. Mr. Gundi revealed that ICS aims to train at least 1,000 parents by 2027, having already reached 300 parents in Nyamira South.
