Lodwar: Nurses working in remote areas of Turkana are set to receive a stipend of Sh10,000 for every child delivery they assist. This new initiative was announced by Dr. Joseph Epem, the county executive committee member for health, during the conclusion of the Nurses’ Week celebrations in Lodwar. The decision follows Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai’s engagement with the social health authority to ensure nurses in dispensaries are included in the beneficiary list, expanding the stipend previously available only to nurses in health centers.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Lomorukai emphasized his dedication to enhancing the welfare and working conditions of nurses in Turkana through a strategic three-point plan. This plan includes merit-based promotions, staff recognition, and bolstering nursing leadership. During the event, the governor revealed plans to automate the promotion process via the County Public Service Board, aiming to ensure that deserving healthcare workers receive timely and fair advancement.
Additionally, Governor Lomorukai announced the introduction of an employee award scheme to honor nurses who demonstrate exceptional dedication and service across the county. He also welcomed the creation of a Directorate of Nursing Services, intended to improve policy coordination, uphold standards, and enhance service delivery within the health sector.
Dr. Epem highlighted the critical role of nurses, noting that they are responsible for patient care following doctors’ prescriptions. This new initiative and the accompanying support measures are expected to significantly improve the working conditions and recognition of nurses in Turkana.
