Nurses Celebrate International Nurses Week At MTRH

Eldoret: Nurses from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Thursday held a procession to mark the beginning of the 2026 International Nurses Week celebrations, joining colleagues across the globe in recognizing the critical role nurses play in healthcare delivery.

According to Kenya News Agency, the celebrations were organized under the theme ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,’ focusing on advocating for safe working environments, fair remuneration, and strengthening leadership within the nursing profession.

The week-long celebrations began on May 6 and will culminate on May 12 during International Nurses Day, celebrated annually to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

Speaking during the event, National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) MTRH Branch Chairperson Dorine Songol praised nurses for their dedication and resilience in caring for patients and supporting families. “As we celebrate International Nurses Week, today, we recognize the dedication, compassion, and strength of our nurses who work tirelessly to care for patients and support families every single day. Their commitment truly makes a difference in our community and inspires all of us,” said Songol.

She also commended the hospital administration for their continued support in promoting nursing excellence and patient-centered care.

MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa said the celebrations will culminate in a national event set to be held in Nairobi next week. Dr. Kirwa described nurses as the backbone of the healthcare system, noting that they constitute nearly one-third of the institution’s workforce. “Nurses play a central role in caring for patients through compassion, empathy, and continuous support for vulnerable people admitted to the hospital. Their role makes them the true owners of patient care,” he said.

He added that while the hospital was celebrating nurses during the commemorative week, their contribution to healthcare is appreciated every day. “I really laud them and all the nurses in this country for their role in care, compassion, and the well-being of our fellow human beings,” added Dr. Kirwa.
