Business activities at the famous Kongelai shopping centre within Kacheliba Town in West Pokot County went on normally as the votes tallying for Kacheliba constituency was ongoing at the Holy Rosary Boys High School – Kacheliba just a few metres away.
The traders who deal in livestock sales every Wednesday went on with their business activities after exercising their civic right to vote at different stations on Tuesday.
John Mnangat told KNA that they were enjoying the peaceful election process and for them their normal business activities had to continue as they await the tallying of the results at the constituency level.
“We voted peacefully and we are waiting for the final results at our work places here being a livestock market day. We have to work hard to continue with our life amid this anxiety on who will win the elections,” stated Mnangat.
He however noted that the market day had not attracted the usual large numbers attributing it to tiring day during voting.
At the same time area residents are breathing a sigh of relief following the availability of dry maize on the market saying to be sourced from the neighbouring country, Uganda.
They said the prices have dropped from the Sh200 per 2kg tin to at most Sh150 which they maintained as a cushion to the high cost of living that has been experienced in the recent past.
“Many livestock farmers have been disposing off their livestock at cheaper prices to get finances to buy the expensive dry maize,” said Teresa Lorimuk.
She said her day begins with buying the less dried maize from the suppliers and uses the open field at the market to sun dry it as she waits for customers.
“This place experiences hot weather for longer hours and the maize dries within a day or two to be ready for sale,” she explained.
