The National Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Chairman Stephen Cheboi has condemned the insecurity prevailing in Turkana that led to the death of 11 people including eight police officers.
Speaking to the press at his office in Nyayo House, the chairman has called upon the government to intervene and take action.
“We as an organization are concerned that in this time and era we still have people in this country that can kill people, cattle rustling is an outdated practice and it should be put to an end. As a National Council of NGOs, we strongly say this must stop,” said Cheboi.
Cheboi said that the new government should put an end to the killings.
“If an armed police officer can be killed, what about innocent citizens? The killing of eight soldiers is not a thing to celebrate, in fact it is sad for the state. The president should ensure the culprits are brought to book and crude weapons confiscated,” Cheboi maintained.
He added that the Council is confident about the current administration considering what the president said on bringing peace to the affected areas and Kenya at large.
Cheboi condoled with families and relatives of those affected saying that nothing wrong should happen to any Kenyan as he considers Kerio Valley to be part of Kenya.
“Kenya is holding a position as a member of the United Nations Security Council and still has issues internally. We urge others to work with the government to ensure peace.” he said.
Cheboi reiterated that as a National Council of NGOs, they are working with organizations and stakeholders to sensitize the public on security and peace and urged other organizations to work with the government to ensure peace.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, during the presser spoke about the drought situation in Kenya saying no one should be allowed to die of hunger.
“Just like we are condemning cattle rustling and banditry, we cannot allow somebody to die from the lack of food, let the government address the issue of lack of food and drought situation in Kenya. We should produce enough food to feed such areas,” Cheboi urged.
He said that as the Council of NGOs, they are ready to work with the government to solve socio-economic issues.
