Kakamega: People with Disabilities (PWDs) from Western Kenya received a significant boost when the National Fund for The Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) donated cheques totaling Sh4.2 million and equipment to enhance their livelihoods.
According to Kenya News Agency, during an annual event held outside the Western Regional Commissioner’s office in Kakamega, 21 institutions aiding PWDs in Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, and Vihiga counties were granted Sh200,000 each. Additionally, individuals with disabilities were provided with various income-generating equipment. This support is expected to assist these institutions in enhancing their activities and improving household livelihoods for PWDs within these regions.
Individual PWDs received machinery and accessories, including sewing machines, car washing equipment, wheelchairs, embroidery, and carpentry equipment, among others. Prof. Francis Ndung’u Liberia, chairperson of the Fund’s Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Safaricom Foundation, and other contributors for their ongoing support.
Dr. Julia Ojiambo, a long-serving board member, encouraged beneficiaries to make good use of the equipment received to improve their economic independence. She emphasized that the aid is intended to help beneficiaries become economically self-reliant and create employment opportunities. The event was attended by Cecelia Mbaka, chairperson of the Audit Committee of the Fund, and Kenneth Lunalo, representing the Regional Commissioner.
