Newly commissioned Kigumo Technical and Vocational Education Training College has been termed as a hope to hundreds of local youth interested to study various technical courses.
The institute which was commissioned on Friday, has a capacity of 1, 000 learners and already 360 students have been enrolled to commerce their studies this January.
The college constructed on a 5-acre piece of land to the tune of Sh. 60 million at Muthithi area by the national government in partnership with local NG-CDF is also expected to boost the economy of local residents in the long term.
Speaking when he commissioned the institute, Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro emphasised the facility will promote the construction industry since most courses offered in the college are expected to produce skilled technicians.
Some of the courses offered in the college include electrical and electronics engineering, plumbing technology, cosmetology and fashion and design.
Others include information and communication technology (ICT), building technology and civil engineering, masonry, carpentry, welding and fabrication, and driving.
Munyoro said Sh 8 million will be factored from the local NG-CDF to sponsor 300 students from the constituency undertake various courses.
He observed some local youths have been idle after completing their secondary education saying sponsoring them to study technical courses will give them a chance to earn a living.
“My office is geared towards empowering young people from this constituency through providing them with necessary skills and that’s why we have factored some money to sponsor the first bunch of learners to undertake technical skills,” stated Munyoro.
He added: “Technical courses are important since a learner after graduating can employ him or herself. And some of the jobs are even better paying than some white-collar jobs.”
The MP revealed that he is in consultation with the college’s principal to source for a bus that will be ferrying students to the facility to reduce their transportation costs.
Following commissioning of the institute the locals around Muthithi shopping centre are constructing rental houses to accommodate hundreds of learners.
The college’s Principal Jennifer Wambui appreciated the MP’s efforts to promote education saying he had undertaken a rigorous awareness campaign to ensure locals know about the new institute.
“The college has been marked as a centre of excellence for building and civil engineering, fashion and design, and is waiting for the government to provide equipment such as blocks, cabros and tiles making machines that are currently being imported,” highlighted the principal.
Wambui called upon local young people to take advantage of the college saying skills offered are of high quality and will help them to venture in income generating projects.
