New Contractor Appointed for Suneka Airstrip Expansion in Kisii County

Bonchari: The expansion of Suneka Airstrip in Bonchari Constituency, Kisii County is set to begin next week after a new contractor took over the project, Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has said.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Omollo, speaking during a church fundraiser at Kenyoro SDA Church in the same Constituency, explained that the initial contractor faced challenges that led to the stalling of the project. Consequently, the government appointed a new contractor to expedite the work. “There were some challenges with the contractor who was tasked with the modernization and expansion of the Suneka Airstrip. Following the President’s recent visit, a new contractor will proceed with the project,” he said.

The Principal Secretary confirmed that all necessary documentation was completed this week, allowing construction to begin. He emphasized that the upgrade would significantly enhance transport, trade, and tourism in the Gusii region, eliminating the need for residents to travel to neighboring counties to access air travel. “The residents of Kisii will no longer have to go all the way to Kisumu, Homa Bay or Migori to access flights because this project will make travel much more convenient,” Dr. Omollo added.

He further stated that the project would improve regional connectivity and create new economic opportunities for the county. Dr. Omollo praised the political leaders in Kisii for their collaborative efforts in promoting development projects within the county. He also encouraged ongoing cooperation between leaders, communities, and the church, noting the role of faith-based institutions in fostering social cohesion and national unity.

Dr. Omollo urged parents to prioritize their children’s education, highlighting the government’s substantial investments in the sector to ensure quality education for all students. On security issues, the Principal Secretary cautioned politicians against using rowdy youth to disrupt opponents’ gatherings, citing past incidents of violence that resulted in loss of life and property damage.

His sentiments were echoed by Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Aburi, who strongly condemned the political violence occurring in parts of the county. Aburi emphasized that no responsible leader should condone violence and pointed out that young people, often involved in political clashes, are put at risk. “I recall the violence that happened at my office last time and still stand firm to condemn such attacks because I do not support any form of violence, and I have never been violent,” she stated.

The Woman Representative called on security agencies to take decisive action against those responsible for such violence and to work closely with political leaders to continue promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among Kenyans.
