It was a sigh of relief for parents and pupils in Uriri Constituency after the area Member of Parliament, Mark Nyamita offered 25 needy students full education scholarships under his Tusome Tujiinue programme.
Majority of the 25 students had failed to report to their respective secondary schools to join form one as they could not raise the fees due to their challenged backgrounds.
The 25 are part of the 131, 854 country-wide learners who were yet to report to their respective secondary schools and according to the data from the Ministry of Education only 1,268,180 learners had reported to Form One as of January 26.
Uriri National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) Chair, Charles Nyariaro who represented Nyamita during the flagging off of the 2024 scholarship beneficiaries at the Uriri CDF headquarters said that the students were selected after conducting home visits across the 22 Sub Locations in the expansive Uriri constituency.
The Tusome Tujiinue scholarship programme will fully sponsor
the 25 students through their entire high school journey. The programme which started in 2018 has been sponsoring needy and vulnerable but bright students to access education.
The scholarship programme recorded a success rate of 85 percent in scholarship application making Nyariaro optimistic that the 2024 cohort will register an education improvement in their four-year high school journey
‘This year, as opposed to the past where the scholarship accommodated students with less than 300 marks, we only took those that had at least 300 marks and above’, concluded Nyariaro.
Meanwhile, Migori County Director of Education Jacob Onyiego has however affirmed that the County has not yet achieved the 100 percent transition. He has, however, urged guardians in the County to consider taking their children to the nearest day and mixed secondary schools for those who are having boarding fees challenges.
