NDMA Launches Road Race to Raise Sh130 Million for Drought-Stricken Counties

Nairobi: The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has unveiled a road race campaign aiming to raise over sh.130.8 million to support drought-stricken counties of Isiolo, Meru, Samburu, and Laikipia. NDMA Chief Executive Officer Rtd Hared Adan, speaking in Archers Post, Isiolo County, highlighted the importance of addressing disasters before they occur by improving livelihoods. This year’s race, set for August 8, expects to benefit over 5,000 households.

According to Kenya News Agency, the funds will be used to improve water infrastructures, sparing women from long-distance travel in search of water. The initiative emphasizes that drought response is a collective responsibility, necessitating partnerships among the government, stakeholders, and the community. Beyond expanding water access, the campaign aims to strengthen climate resilience, restore degraded lands, and promote peace initiatives in the drylands.

Rtd Adan noted the region’s history of insecurity and emphasized the race’s role in fostering community interaction and unity through sports. The NDMA Road Race for Peace and Resilience includes 10 km, 5 km, and 2 km races, with seasoned athlete Daniel Simiu Ebenyo serving as the road race ambassador. Ebenyo, who hails from Baragoi, Samburu County, shared his personal journey of overcoming hardships and encouraged young people not to lose hope.

Ebenyo urged participation in the race, emphasizing its significance for a brighter future for children, mothers seeking water, and pastoralists safeguarding their livelihoods. He called on athletes, Kenyans, and stakeholders to join the race on August 8 in Archer’s Post, highlighting the opportunity to support an often-overlooked area in development efforts.

NDMA Board Chairperson Shallow Yahya underscored the importance of unity in attracting development opportunities and overcoming challenges like drought and insecurity in pastoral areas. Yahya expressed optimism that maintaining peace in the four counties could lead to significant achievements in the region.
