National ID Registration Drive Targets 60,000 in Elgeyo Marakwet

Elgeyo marakwet: The National Registration Bureau has embarked on a 10-day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) aimed at issuing national Identification Cards to 60,000 new applicants in Elgeyo Marakwet county. The initiative is part of a broader effort to address registration challenges in the area.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, highlighted that Elgeyo Marakwet is one of 15 counties targeted in this registration exercise. The county has faced difficulties in registration processes due to prevailing insecurity issues. Dr. Kipsang addressed a gathering at the KMTC Iten, where he met with local chiefs and their assistants, emphasizing their crucial role in facilitating the initiative by leveraging their connections with citizens at the grassroots level.

Dr. Kipsang expressed concerns about the repercussions of not having identification documents, noting that residents have been excluded from accessing various government services. This initiative aims to mitigate such issues by easing the registration process.

Governor Wisely Rotich assured that the county government would collaborate with the national government to ensure the success of the registration drive. He committed to providing county vehicles to help officers reach remote areas of Elgeyo Marakwet. Governor Rotich encouraged residents to participate in the RRI, which aims to bring registration services closer to them, and urged them to register in large numbers.

Additionally, Governor Rotich advised residents to register as voters once they obtain their IDs, underscoring the importance of participating in the upcoming general election. He noted that while 130,000 residents already possess IDs, they have not yet registered as voters.
