Multimillion Water Project Launched In Nanyuki To Ease Water Shortage

Nanyuki: Water rationing in Nanyuki Town in Laikipia County and its environs will now be a long gone situation, following completion of a water intake in Mt Kenya forest that has added daily water supply by six million litres.

According to Kenya News Agency, the completion of the Sh48 million project constructed in the past one year through a bank loan facility advanced to Nanyuki Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO), is set to fill the deficit of four million litres of water.

While launching the piping works for Phase III of the project, Governor Joshua Irungu said despite a rapid population growth, residents have been relying on old water infrastructure that forced weekly rationing of the essential commodity. “We want to ensure there is a 24/7 water supply in Nanyuki town. Residents have been getting water thrice a week and some areas twice. Those with storey buildings had challenges in getting water,” said Irungu.

The Nanyuki Bulk Water Common Intake project will also benefit residents in the neighbouring counties of Nyeri and Meru, ensuring uninterrupted supply around the clock for the next 20 years. Irungu further pointed out that the water piping will be extended to areas of Jua Kali and Naibor, explaining: “We want to extend the water services to adjacent areas of Nanyuki town, we are quantifying the amount of water they will require.”

The project comes with expansion and rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure, construction of pumping stations, and establishment of a modern wastewater treatment plant to improve sanitation service delivery and environmental management. The new intake has the capacity to increase water supply from 6,000 to 15,000 cubic metres per day.
