Turkana: A multi-agency team of officers from the World Bank, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), and the State Department of Social Protection has embarked on a four-day tour of Turkana. The objective is to gain insights from the World Food Programme’s (WFP) initiatives aimed at integrating economic inclusion for communities affected by climate change.
According to Kenya News Agency, Turkana County Secretary Dr. Richard Ekai, during a courtesy visit to his office, emphasized the need for enhanced community production systems to transition the county from aid dependency to food sustainability. He highlighted Turkana’s rich resources, including water availability and arable land, and urged the visiting partners to consider infrastructure development to unlock this potential.
Dr. Ekai further encouraged the team to align their initiatives with the County Government’s Nine-Point Agenda, which he described as an inclusive and comprehensive framework for effective intervention design.
Earlier, Sarah Ayodi, Head of the WFP Lodwar Office, outlined the purpose of the learning mission. She explained that the goal is to gather insights through interactions with beneficiaries of the Climate Resilient Food Systems Hub. Over the four-day period, the team will visit various sites, including installations by Vijana in Kilimobiz, and programs in Kakuma, Katilu, and Kalokol under the Climate Resilient Food Systems Hubs.
The county team hosting the visitors included Chief Officers David Maraka (Agriculture), Joseph Ekalale (Environment and Climate Change), Dr. Ezekiel Etelej (Livestock Development), and Simon Etom (Water Services).
