Embu: The political unity of the larger Mount Kenya region, a hallmark since independence, is facing challenges as leaders from Mt. Kenya East express dissatisfaction and the possibility of parting ways with their Western counterparts. This development follows statements made by key regional figures who feel marginalized in developmental matters.

According to Kenya News Agency, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, alongside other leaders, has voiced the possibility of Mt. Kenya East pursuing its political path independently if their Western counterparts do not adjust their approach. Ruku emphasized that the region has been historically overlooked in terms of development and needs to focus on its own political future and priorities.

During a church service at Full Gospel Church in Kangaru, CS Ruku urged residents to dismiss opposition leaders’ calls, particularly those led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, to oppose President William Ruto and his government’s agenda. Ruku accused Gachagua of fostering a ‘systemic hatred’ against the President in the region.

Ruku insisted that Mt. Kenya East should defend its political and economic interests and not follow leaders from the West blindly, who have benefited more from past governments’ developments. Highlighting the region’s potential, Ruku cited Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki as proof that Mt. Kenya East possesses strong national leadership capable of shaping its future independently.

Echoing Ruku’s sentiments, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire stressed the readiness of Mt. Kenya East to forge its own political path, stating the region must reject political engagements that do not benefit their constituents. Mbarire’s comments underline the growing resolve among Eastern leaders to assert their region’s interests more forcefully.
