Mombasa Politicians Warned Against Using Goons Ahead Of 2027 Elections

Mombasa: As the 2027 General Election draws closer, Mombasa County Commissioner (CC), Mohamed Nur, has warned politicians against using goons and youths to disrupt opponents’ meetings or masquerade as security personnel during political activities. Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations at the Bilima Grounds in Kisauni Sub-County, held amid heavy rains, Nur said security agencies would not hesitate to arrest anyone who breaks the law, regardless of their social status or political affiliation. He urged politicians to seek police protection whenever necessary, instead of relying on hired goons.

According to Kenya News Agency, Nur emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Mombasa and assured that adequate security would be provided for political meetings. He discouraged divisive and inciteful politics, expressing satisfaction with the current peaceful state of the region. The CC stressed the need for collaboration between the public and security agencies to enhance security through information sharing.

Nur also encouraged residents to register under the Boma Yangu programme to benefit from Affordable Housing projects initiated by the government. He highlighted the Sh31 billion investment in housing, markets, and hostels, with specific mention of the Makupa Modern Mixed Urban Development project in Mvita Sub-County, valued at Sh685 million, and the Sh7 billion Nyali Affordable Housing Project, which is 50 percent complete.

Additionally, Nur discussed the Sh7.5 billion Nyali Bridge-Mtwapa Bridge Road project, which began in November 2022 and is expected to be completed by August 2027. The project includes a four-lane dual carriageway, service roads, and facilities for non-motorised transport.

On land issues, the Commissioner reassured residents that no evictions would occur as the government has directed that squatters should not be removed from occupied land. He mentioned ongoing negotiations with landowners to purchase properties occupied by squatters and the government’s commitment to issuing 200,000 title deeds within the next three months.

Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba praised the County Security and Intelligence Committee for improving security in the area, which had previously been troubled by juvenile gangs. Bedzimba also assured residents that evictions would not occur, reinforcing the government’s stance on land matters.
