Mombasa: Mombasa County Commissioner (CC), Mohamed Noor, has assured residents and tourists that security measures have been heightened during the December and New Year festive season. Noor emphasized that security agencies are prepared to tackle criminal activities in the coastal city and its surrounding areas. The County Administrator reassured the public that security personnel are committed to preventing criminal gangs from harassing and terrorizing people, with increased police presence in areas such as shopping malls, beaches, tourist resorts, and places of worship.

According to Kenya News Agency, the CC revealed that authorities have curtailed the activities of machete-wielding gangs and drug peddlers in the Kisauni and Likoni Sub-counties through intensified police crackdowns. Noor stated that stolen items, including phones, have been recovered from criminals and phone repair shops, with plans to return them to rightful owners after proper identification. Accompanied by Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki,
Noor urged the public to report suspicious activities to the police to prevent crime.

Noor also mentioned plans to address the security threats posed by street families, roadside beggars, hawkers, and pickpockets in the Central Business District (CBD). He noted that some individuals posing as beggars and street urchins have been found to be agents of criminals. The presence of beggars in public spaces has become both a visual and security concern. Addressing the media at the China Square Mombasa Branch, Noor warned criminals to cease their activities or face strict police action.

As Chairman of the County Security and Intelligence Committee, Noor announced intensified police patrols to ensure a safe holiday season. He urged tourist hotels to enhance their security measures to protect guests. Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki called for peaceful coexistence and encouraged residents to embrace values such as peace and empathy throughout their lives.

Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) Rapid Response Officer, Franci
s Auma, urged security agencies to maintain their efforts, especially during this critical festive period, to ensure safety for residents and visitors. Auma highlighted issues such as phone snatching, muggings, and robberies, calling for enhanced police patrols. Additionally, community policing member Feisal Abdalla and local business operators Peter Kiraa and Beatrice Wanjala expressed concerns about criminal activities targeting businesses in the CBD.
