Students from Migori County will benefit from Sh120 million bursary allocated in the budget for the 2022-2023 Financial Year.
Speaking at the County Chambers, the chair for the Budget and Appropriation Committee George Omamba noted that the Sh8.9 billion budget had factored Sh120 million bursary allocation for the needy and bright students in order to help them advance in their education.
Omamba noted that for the past three financial years, the bursary was not budgeted for, denying needy students the opportunity to benefit from the kitty.
“We will compare and check the figures in the Appropriation Bill, especially for the bursary allocations and the figures that they have passed in the main budget to ascertain that all the necessary documentation is included as required by the law before its passage, said Omamba.
Omamba also noted that stalled projects that had fully been budgeted for under the county revenue will be projected in the subsequent supplementary budget allocations noting, Covid 19 hindered revenue collection while other sectors’ budgets were redirected to health to curb the spread of the disease.
The Chair Finance Committee Graham Kagali applauded the Budget and Appropriation Committee for allocating funds for bursary. He noted that the bursary allocation should be consistent to safeguard the future of Migori children.
He observed that without education the county cannot move forward in terms of human resource and wealth generation.
Kagali also applauded the Budget and Appropriation committee for allocating Sh710 million to Ward Community Projects that will be spearheaded by the MCAs. He noted that earmarked ward projects aim to improve the lives of the Migori residents at the lowest levels of administration.
The finance committee chair called upon the Migori residents to participate in the July to August 2022 County Integrated plan (CIP) public participation meetings that will provide a socioeconomic road map for the next five years adding the CIP meetings will be conducted at ward levels to capture the needs of the residents.
Migori County Assembly Speaker George Duro thanked the house for considering the passage of the county budget pointing out that the County Assembly will approve the budget estimates once the Appropriation Bill committee approves the entire budget.
“We will make sure that the County Assembly goes ahead to adapt and pass the budget before the house is dissolved,” stated Duro.
Migori County Budget 2022-2023 allocated 69 percent of the total budget to the recurrent expenditure while 41 percent went to development. The major share of the budget was allocated to the health sector which accounted for 27 percent, an equivalent of Sh2.4 billion
