Migori: A section of Migori County has threatened to boycott the 2027 General Election if the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party continues with the zoning talks with their counterparts from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

According to Kenya News Agency, residents in Migori town expressed concern that zoning would deny them the freedom to exercise their democratic rights in choosing their preferred leaders across all levels of elective posts. Led by Bunge La Wananchi Chairperson-Migori Chapter Charles Osewe, they explained that a significant portion of potential voters may opt out of voting altogether if forced to choose from pre-selected candidates come August 2027.

Residents also criticized current political leaders from Nyanza for championing zoning, accusing them of failing to deliver development and relying on ODM party backing to secure electoral victories. Osewe emphasized that the upcoming elections should be driven by the will of the people, highlighting voters’ desire to elect visionary leaders capable of delivering meaningful change both nationally and at the county level.

Osewe further noted that zoning areas for certain political parties signaled fear and panic among current leaders who doubt their reelection prospects. He urged for party freedom across the country, allowing individuals to run for election and safeguarding democracy by upholding the right to elect leaders at all levels.

John Opiyo, a resident of Migori town, echoed these sentiments, arguing that designating areas as ODM strongholds would deny opportunities to competent leaders from other political parties eager to bring meaningful change. Opiyo claimed those advocating for zoning have not fulfilled their election promises and seek an easier path to reelection.

He also stressed that political competition from parties like UDA in Nyanza would strengthen democracy and political parties in Kenya. In recent months, ODM has engaged in electoral zoning, particularly in stronghold areas, as talks with UDA intensify ahead of a pre-coalition pact for the 2027 general election. ODM officials have been pushing for a 50-50 power-sharing agreement with UDA, respect for ODM strongholds, and open competition in other areas.
