Migori Man’s 67-Kilometre Walk for Justice Highlights Flaws in Kenyan Judicial System

Migori: A 56-year-old man from Migori, George Chacha, has embarked on a 67-kilometre journey to advocate against injustices within the Kenyan judicial system. Chacha, a human rights advocate and civic educator from the Kuria region, began his bold trek from Migori town to the Kisii Law Court to present a petition addressing critical issues in the justice system.

According to Kenya News Agency, Chacha’s petition highlights the challenges of delayed justice, favouritism, and erroneous judgments that have left many Kenyans unable to access fair outcomes within the courts. As a retired Air Force officer, Chacha argues that justice in Kenya often leans towards those who can afford it rather than being a true measure of fairness.

Chacha emphasizes the need for public advocacy, stating that many victims are silenced by fear of retaliation and threats. He believes it is essential to expose these societal ills to prevent future generations from suffering due to today’s silence. Despite acknowledging the existence of diligent judges and magistrates, Chacha criticizes those who have turned the justice system into a marketplace where the highest bidder prevails, leaving the less fortunate broken.

His journey is not motivated by revenge but a desire to unmask corruption within the system and restore dignity to Kenyans through their courts. Chacha’s initiative aims to activate specific constitutional articles to uphold dignity and human rights for those humiliated by the system. He stresses that his actions are for the benefit of future generations, urging for reforms that ensure justice for all.

Chacha points out that some court rulings raise more questions than answers, advocating for better advocacy to restore hope to citizens. Surveys indicate widespread distrust in the Kenyan courts, with The Trends and Insights for Africa (2023) revealing that only 43.4 percent of Kenyans view the courts positively. Additionally, Afrobarometer (2021) found that 16.9 percent of Kenyans lack trust in key institutions, underscoring the need for the reforms Chacha is championing.
