Homa bay: A memorial service for the late ODM party leader Raila Odinga is set to be held in Homa Bay town this week. ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga announced that the service will take place at the Raila Odinga Stadium on Wednesday, allowing residents who were unable to travel to Bondo the opportunity to pay their respects to the late former Prime Minister.
According to Kenya News Agency, the announcement has elicited mixed reactions among the residents, with some questioning the necessity of the event, while others see it as a vital moment for healing. Politician Odiyo Owidi criticized the event, suggesting that the funds could be better utilized for healthcare facilities instead of a memorial service.
ODM members in Homa Bay have expressed differing views from Mr. Owidi, emphasizing the importance of the memorial for supporters who could not attend the Bondo service. Karachuonyo ODM Chairperson George Maigo acknowledged critics’ rights to their opinions but urged them not to
restrict others’ freedoms. Rangwe ODM Chairperson Caroline Owidhi highlighted the need for party members to have a platform to grieve and find closure.
Suba North ODM Chairperson Narkiso Tuko remarked on the significant loss Odinga’s death represents to many Kenyans, asserting that the memorial is an appropriate tribute. He refuted claims that public funds would be used or that mourners would be paid to attend. Youths from the county, led by Fred Okwany, Sinond Okello, and Philip Osinde, pointed out the short notice of the announcement, which might prevent some residents from attending.
