Man Fakes Deaths Of Family Members

A man appeared before a Mombasa court for allegedly fraudulently obtaining Sh600,000 from an insurance compensation after faking the deaths of his family members.

Philip Odero Kauma who was arraigned before Resident Magistrate Viola Muthoni was charged with four counts of obtaining money under false pretense.

In the first count, he admitted obtaining Sh100, 000 as the last expense claim from UAP OLD Mutual Insurance Company on 2 June, 2021 at KCB Mwembe Tayari branch within Mombasa County, by falsely pretending that Veronica Anyango Odero died on June 16, 2021.

In the second count, Kauma confessed to have obtained Sh100, 000 as last expense claim from UAP OLD Mutual Insurance Company on 2 September, 2021 at KCB Mwembe Tayari branch within Mombasa County by falsely pretending that Benedetta Makanda Kauma was deceased.

In the third count, he admitted receiving Sh250, 000 as last expense claim from UAP OLD Mutual Insurance Company on 5 October, 2021 at KCB Mwembe Tayari branch within Mombasa County by falsely pretending that Benedetta Makanda Kauma was dead.

In the fourth count, Kauma attempted to receive Sh500,000 as last expense claim from UAP OLD Mutual Insurance Company on 5 October, 2021 at KCB Mwembe Tayari branch within Mombasa County by falsely pretending that Serephine Anyango Juma had died 30 August 2021.

Prosecution counsel Mohamed Yassir prayed for more time to conclude the investigation and enable him to read to gather more information and the matter was fixed for mention on 13, February 2023.
