Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Upgrades Facilities on International Women’s Day

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, a leading medical facility in Nairobi, has officially launched its upgraded facilities on International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2023. The event was presided over by the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health, Dr. Nakhumicha S. Wafula, who unveiled the new blood transfusion center, renal unit, ICU, and playground.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Embrace Equity,” aligns with the hospital’s goal of providing equitable access to healthcare for all. With the addition of these upgraded facilities, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital will serve a significant population in Nairobi and its environs, ensuring that women have access to the best possible care.

One of the notable upgrades is the collaboration between the Nairobi City County Government and the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority in upgrading the hospital’s blood collection center to a full satellite. This development will serve the eastern side of Nairobi, providing safe and reliable blood transfusions.

The CS noted that the renal unit is also a significant addition to the hospital’s facilities. Chronic kidney disease affects four million Kenyans, with only 10% having access to dialysis services. “The establishment of this unit will ease the burden and waiting period at the National Referral Hospital – KNH,” she said.

In addition, the critical care unit will provide much-needed relief as there is a shortage of ICU beds and ventilators across both public and private hospitals in Kenya. The playground is a thoughtful addition, providing an area for children to engage in recreational activities, improving their psychological well-being, especially for children suffering from chronic illnesses like cancer, TB, and kidney diseases.

The partnership between the Ministry of Health and the Nairobi City County Government has led to the provision of modern equipment and facilities, improving access to cost-effective healthcare, enhancing capacity, and improving infrastructure at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

“The launch of the upgraded Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital facilities is a significant milestone in efforts to improve healthcare and the quality of life for all citizens. The hospital’s dedication to providing equitable access to healthcare for women and all Kenyans is commendable and aligns with this year’s International Women’s Day theme,” said the CS.
