As the effects of climate change continue to affect yields, the need to hasten resilience in maize farming remains the center of Agricultural actors.
In order to strengthen food security in the country, the Golden Power Crop organization in collaboration with the crop and grain organization has started training Bungoma farmers on the use of high quality fertilizers with minerals and the development of food products.
The newly introduced fertilizer is said to be resistant to adverse climatic conditions and it has been recommended to farmers at this time when proceeds from farms have greatly gone down.
Speaking to farmers during training at the Bungoma NCPB offices, GPC director Joel Kariuki said that the training aims at ensuring that farmers get enhanced yield, which he says will improve food security countrywide.
“This training is key to farmers of Bungoma since the county is among the main food baskets in the country, we want to assist them get more yields so that we can curb the food shortage in the country,” he said.
The farmers will benefit from GPC developed fertilizers that will be sold at a lower price compared to other alternatives.
Farmers who attended the training have lauded GPC for the move, citing that lack of expertise knowledge has affected their choices for seeds and fertilizer and plunged many into losses.
“Such a step is very crucial as we expect rains, this is likely to change our farming behavior and increase our income,” said Michael Yegon, a farmer from Kopsiro in Mount Elgon.
The organization has also promised to distribute improved seed breeds which mature within a shorter period of time.
It should be noted that the County Government of Bungoma will also be distributing free fertilizer and seedlings to vulnerable families in a move to beef up food security.
