Elgeyo marakwet: Senior Principal Magistrate Gladys Adhiambo has cited kangaroo courts as the major obstacle to accessing justice for children in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The magistrate emphasized that matters involving children should be processed through the official court system, warning that engaging in unofficial kangaroo courts is illegal and will be met with stern action.
According to Kenya News Agency, Magistrate Adhiambo addressed the press at Iten law courts, urging all stakeholders in the judicial process to provide necessary documents, reports, and witnesses to ensure that child-related cases are resolved during the current child justice month. She highlighted the court’s commitment to ensuring that cases involving children are heard and determined within six months, with a particular focus on clearing any pending cases this month.
Magistrate Adhiambo appealed to advocates to attend court sessions as required, and called on police officers to provide necessary files and witnesses promptly. She also urged children and probation officers to ensure timely submission of reports to the court. The magistrate reminded parents of their equal responsibilities in caring for their children, regardless of marital status, and encouraged anyone with child-related cases to file them in court. A special desk has been set up to assist individuals facing challenges in filing such cases.
Furthermore, Magistrate Adhiambo reassured the public that it is not necessary to travel to Iten to file cases, as the court offers virtual hearings, allowing access to justice from any location.
