Lugari lawmaker Nabii Nabwera has disbursed Sh28 million to over 3000 needy secondary and university students in the constituency.
Under the sponsorship, 166 total orphans in secondary schools and universities will each benefit from a four-year full scholarship courtesy of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Speaking during the cheque disbursement exercise yesterday at Maturu primary school in Matete Sub County, Nabwera said he is determined to fulfill his campaign promise of transforming the constituency’s education sector.
“During the campaign period I promised to invest Sh40 million to bursaries, scholarships and motivation of teachers in our schools-it was not a lie. I also promised to fully educate total orphans-I was not lying. Today as we gather here, we have paid a whole year’s school fees for total orphans in secondary schools and universities. They will fully be sponsored for the four years they will be schooling,”Nabwera stated.
He appealed to the students to reciprocate the sponsorship by excelling in their studies while urging parents and guardians to play their role now that the school fees part has been taken care of.
Nabwera regretted the dismal performance of Lugari Constituency schools in national examinations calling for concerted efforts from all stakeholders.
The first time MP said it was not in order for the constituency to produce only 3 ‘A-minus’ grade students in last year’s KCSE examination from 101 secondary schools.
Despite stating that KCSE results is the biggest disaster in the constituency, he lauded secondary school principals for maintaining integrity and shunning exam malpractice.
Kakamega County Woman MP Elsie Muhanda lauded Nabwera for coming out vigorously to support the constituency’s education sector.
She promised to corroborate her colleague’s efforts through the National Government Affirmative Fund.
Lugari Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Moses Gicharu advised the bursary beneficiaries to reciprocate through hard work.
“The only way you can appreciate the MP and other stakeholders is to work hard. The decision to succeed and all you need to succeed squarely lies with you. To the parents you can only appreciate by according education the seriousness it deserves,”Gicharu said.
His Matete counterpart Philip Sigei said if all stakeholders join hands they will be able to uplift the education standards in the constituency.
Lugari Sub County Director of Education Magdaline Igwatai hailed the MP for the sponsorship saying there is no reason for the students to produce poor results in future.
She cited absenteeism and drug abuse as the major causes of poor national examination results in the constituency.
