Likoni: A family in Likoni is calling for justice for their kin who was tragically shot by police in 2021 at the height of the Covid-19 restrictions.
According to Kenya News Agency, Masoud Matano, father of the deceased, stated that his 17-year-old son, Matano Masoud, was dragged from a building and shot six times. The autopsy report indicated that the form three student suffered bullet wounds to the head, back, and chest, leading to his death due to haemorrhage.
Matano criticized the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for complacency, despite investigations by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) showing police fault and excessive force. He highlighted the unprocedural shelving of the case by the ODPP, which has left the family in grief and confusion.
Umi Mramba, the mother of the slain boy, expressed feelings of desertion by state agencies responsible for handling such matters. She pointed out that similar cases have been promptly expedited and questioned why her family’s case has been neglected. She urged the ODPP to provide the same justice as has been accorded to others.
Coast Social Justice Travelling Theatre Coordinator and Human rights activist Bradley Ouna commented on the failure in both fair administrative and access to justice. He indicated that the inaction by the ODPP is a sign of either interference or disregard for the Matano family’s plight. Ouna stated that the civil society network is giving the ODPP a seven-day window to act on the case or face protests. He warned of visiting the ODPP’s office and protesting until justice is served for the Matano family.
