Libraries Witness Increased Use As Learners Prepare For Examinations

Kakamega: Public libraries in Kakamega County are witnessing increased use by learners during the current school holidays, as students turn to the facilities for revision materials and digital resources ahead of examinations. Director of Library Services in Kakamega County, Vincent Kitoto, noted that the number of learners using the libraries increases during the April and August holidays, with many seeking access to books and other learning resources.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kitoto mentioned that the libraries, while serving the general public, see a significant proportion of their readership from students, especially during examination periods. He remarked, “People mostly come to the library to read for examinations. Leisure reading is dying, not only here but in the whole world.”

The growing demand for library services has put pressure on the available space, particularly at the Kakamega library, where the junior section often becomes congested. Kitoto revealed that the county government allocated 2 million shillings this financial year for restocking the library, ensuring the allocation remains stable as the Competency-Based Curriculum Education (CBE) progresses.

“We are expecting grade 11 books next year, which are not yet out. We therefore need to maintain the budget so that we can continue to support the national education programmes,” Kitoto explained. Additionally, the county government allocated 3 million shillings for library restocking after the library function devolved, allowing the facility to purchase books from publishers.

Kitoto also disclosed that approximately Sh1.3 million had been spent to renovate public and staff sanitary facilities, which were in poor condition. Plans are underway to enhance the lighting system and expand the junior section. Despite the advent of technology, Kitoto stated that Artificial Intelligence had not reduced the number of learners visiting the library; however, he emphasized the need for more computers and better-equipped electronic resource sections to meet users’ evolving needs.

Access to adequate digital resources would complement the physical books available at the libraries, enabling learners to access more information for their studies. Kitoto noted that library demand peaks during the April and August holidays, with a decline in users after examinations during the December holiday. He expressed concerns about the declining culture of leisure reading, attributing it to some schools prioritizing other facilities over well-stocked libraries.

Kakamega currently has two public library facilities located in Kakamega town at Lusumu. The county government is actively working to address challenges affecting both facilities. Kitoto highlighted that modern library services have evolved beyond merely providing books, emphasizing the necessity of digital resources and conducive study spaces for learners and the public.
